South Sea pearls are often referred to as the queen of gems.

A South Sea pearl is a pearl produced by the Pinctada maxima mollusk.

South Sea pearls are among the largest and most valuable commercially harvested cultured pearls in the world. The average size of a South Sea pearl is 12 to 13 mm in diameter, with most harvests producing a range of sizes from 9 mm to 20 mm.

They are currently cultured in areas throughout the Indian and Pacific Oceans, primarily in Indonesia, Australia and the Philippines.

These waters are the native habitat of a large oyster known as Pinctada maxima. This oyster grows up to 12 inches in diameter, and can be nucleated with a much larger bead than other saltwater oysters

There are two varieties of Pinctada maxima, the silver-lipped and the gold-lipped. The two are distinguished by their distinct coloration of the outer edge of the interior. This type of shell is also known as mother-of-pearl, and is responsible for the coloration of the cultured pearls produced, therefore the name.

The South Seas are also extremely clean, and filled with plankton – the Pinctada maxima's favorite food source. The clean waters and abundant food supply also speeds the nacre production. The growth period for South Sea pearls is a minimum of two years allowing for a larger size.

South Sea pearls have several distinct characteristics that are unique to this gem. The nacre is unusually thick, ranging from 2 - 6 mm. South Sea pearls have a unique, satiny luster that comes from the rapidly deposited nacre and warm waters of the South Seas. South Sea pearls also have a subtle array of colors; typically white, cream, silver, and golden, that are rare in other pearl types.

Valuable pearls occur naturally in the wild, but they are extremely rare! Cultured or farmed pearls make up the majority of those that are currently sold. Pearls from the sea are valued more highly than freshwater pearls.

Due to the extremely high cost of production, they remain among the costliest pearls on the market today

We have examined web store sites and internet auctions, etc., and many of the cultured South Sea pearls sold there are not real South Sea pearls.

Many cheap Chinese Shell beads and cheap larger freshwater pearls are completely misrepresented and offered as “genuine South Sea pearls” for bargain prices.  You may choose to pay less for fake pearls, but do you really think they are genuine? Some sellers offer “South Sea SHELL pearls” (a plastic or resin bead which is coated with a lacquer is produced in China ), SHELL pearls or beads, SEA pearls and other fantasy names in the category “Genuine South Sea pearls”. This is wrong and a completely misleading representation. Many buyers are not aware of this.
