SUPERB ANTIQUE ENGLISH GOLD LOCKET FOB HAIR & AMBROTYPE
A fabulous quality antique English, solid 9 carat gold (tests thereabouts); beautifully made, with unusually wide body, superb deeply hand chased and engraved floral decoration, and with its original matching bail. To one side is a glazed locket compartment containing a slightly later hand-tinted early photograph (on glass) image depicting a gentleman; the other side is a hinged door to the inside, the door itself with a high rounded glazed locket compartment containing a raised, 3d hair memento, fabulously finely displayed in a multi-plume shape, with gilt wire embellishment, on a textile backing. The door opens to reveal a sizeable woven hair memento inside (all easily removed/replaced if desired).
Wonderful quality, a very unusual design, fully featured and in astounding original condition!
This tests as solid gold, although there is possibly a metal liner within, impossibly to say for sure without filing deeply.
CONDITION: All original and very good. Slightest signs of wear, no damage. Under glasses slightly dirty. Flat glass over photo possibly a very early replacement, possibly not.
DEFECTS: None.
DATE/MARKS: Around 1830/40. Not marked.
DIMENSIONS: 37 mm diameter (1 inch = 25.4 mm). To give an impression of scale, the coin is 19 mm or ¾ of an inch diameter.
WEIGHT: Approx. 35.7 grams.
