1915-S ST. GAUDENS DOUBLE EAGLE LOW POPULATION ~ONLY 1 HIGHER HIGH GRADE OF MS66 BY NGC
After this auction closes, please contact us to confirm any of our eBay Second Chance offers at our toll free number: (888)454–0444
While the 1915-S is a common coin and can easily be obtained in lower Mint State, near and sometimes full Gem with some regularity, the 1915-S is very elusive in such a lofty condition as the one offered here. Essentially unimprovable, only a solitary NGC example has been graded higher at MS67
Although the usual matte surfaces are still present, nothing else about this coin is typical. The mint luster is thick and frosted, with an apricot-gold patination. The design features are exquisitely brought up, with sharp definition on Liberty's face, fingers, and toes as well as the face and talons of the Eagle on the reverse. This Saint does exhibit a scant peppering of tiny bagmarks that are consistent with the MS66 grade. However, nothing distracts from the overall beauty of this remarkable Gem.
Many of the lower Mint State grades probably came from either a hoard of over 50 Uncs. that turned up in 1980 or, a bag of 1,000 pieces that was recovered in Central America in 1983 as written up by Walter Breen (1988).
Out of the 567,500 Saints produced at the San Francisco in 1915, ONLY 14,007 examples have survived to be graded by NGC.
Of the 14,007 graded, ONLY 107 have been graded as high as MS66.
Of all the different professional coin grading services, only NGC has graded a single specimen higher at MS67.
This example is among the finest that have ever been certified. Indeed, PCGS has never graded a finer example and, NGC has certified exactly one coin above the MS66 grade level. The few high quality examples of this issue to reach the marketplace during any time period always find immediate new permanent homes.
Currently, Collectors Universe lists a value for the 1915-S St. Gaudens graded Gem MS66 at: $7,500.00
BUY-IT-NOW price LOWER then the Collector's Universe value!!!
