Michel Suret-Canale. Short Biography by Liti Kitiyakara.
In 1927 Paris, engraver and medal designer Victor Suret-Canale built "la maison Canale" at 3, rue des arts, a neighborhood known for its artistic residents including the renowned sculptor Jacques Lipchitz, Meichaninof and, for a time, Chagal.
Both Suret-Canale, who'd studied at l' École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs, and his wife Thérèse, a painter educated first in Germany and then in Paris at the Académie Julian, were no exception. The couple had two children, Charlotte and Jean, and it was here that Jean's son, Michel Suret-Canale, was born. La maison Canale was a fertile environment for both the imagination and the intellect.
Michel's father Jean was a university professor and widely published author of African history, specializing in the colonization of Black Africa. His mother Georgette was a feminist journalist, novelist and published poet.
Their children inherited the grandparents' artistic talent while Jean and Georgette instilled in their offspring a lifelong belief in democracy, freedom and equality. Michel, the youngest of Jean and Georgette's three children, began his studies in the realm of the intellect, but by the age of 14 felt frustrated there and decided to enroll in the art section at school.
Once this decision was made, he never looked back. Today Michel is an established artist in Europe and has written books, worked in multimedia and Web design and with French theatrical clowns among other projects in the arts. Throughout it all, Michel has maintained an enthusiasm and love for the arts that shows in the depth and sincerity of his work. As he once expressed personally: Art has to see with deepness, and it is definitely a very long way of work. It is obvious that Michel Suret-Canale "lives" his art, immersing himself in creativity and continuing to explore where it might take him in the future.
