 These maki-e paintings articulate very significant power shifting movement in ancient Japan. These symbolic animals were first drawn in late Heian period of 11th centuries. In that period, noble families who ruled Japan were losing control to lower ranked warrior and farmers. Class differences were so strong that general people did not have strong voice against noble families and were banned to criticize exquisite, high culture noble families in public. To overpower those innocent voices, number of Buddhist ceremonies and rituals were held to honor high class imperial families.

 

Do you know what did those under privileged do then? They symbolized landlords, noble families and rituals in funny animal (rabbit, monkey, toad etc.)　scrolls without any text or writing. And keep continuing protesting them. I salute their peaceful resistance.
