THE 4 LEVELS OF PEEL DEPTH

NOTE: The type of chemical peel active ingredient and concentration along with other factors ultimately determines the depth of the peel. Other factors include whether a peel preparation was performed, the number of layers of chemical peel applied to the skin, the duration of the chemical on the surface of the skin, and the area of the skin that will be treated.

 

VERY SUPERFICIAL

 These peels are sometimes referred to as "lunchtime peels", and have significantly increased in popularity, since you can return to work immediately without having to worry about long recovery periods. These type of peels are more like an exfoliation, since the superficial layers of the stratum corneum (top of the epidermis) is removed. It is best to prep the skin 2 weeks prior to treatment, which will allow for a deeper more even peel. These peels are great for smoothing the texture of thick or rough skin and increasing the absorption of other skin rejuvenating products.  Alpha hydroxy acids (AHA's) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) are normally used as light peeling agents since they are the mildest of the acids. Light peels can include glycolic acid, lactic acid, fruit acids, and salicylic acid. These light peels have been used for years to remove fine lines, wrinkles, sun-damaged skin, uneven pigmentation, and fade scars over time with repeated treatments. Light peels are fast, easy, and can be performed at home or in a physician's office without the aid of an anesthetic. The procedure may take between 5-6 minutes, with practically no pain, and only minor stinging or a slight tingling sensation. This type of peel procedure may be performed every 2-3 weeks.


SUPERFICIAL

Chemical peels such as Resorcinol, Salicylic acid 10-20%, solid CO₂ (dry ice), glycolic 20%-30%, and lactic depending on concentration can be considered superficial. Superficial peels dig a little deeper penetrating through the epidermal layer.  These peels are often used for small scars, remnant acne discoloration, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, pore cleansing, sun-damaged skin, dark or white spots, and other major blemishes. These are the most common type of peels performed today in medical spas, skin care facilities, or by an esthetician. The process can take between 8-10 minutes depending on the desired results and concentration used. Almost immediately there will be a small to medium tingling and burning sensation associated with this type of peel. After several minutes the burn will subside and your skin will feel and look much better. These peels can be performed in a surgery center, physician's office, or at home with proper instructions.



MEDIUM PEELS

With the medium peels the results are priceless, however recovery time can last much longer up to 2 full weeks or sometimes more. Medium peels penetrate through the epidermis into the papillary dermis resulting in a much deeper peel. Medium peels include Glycolic acid 50% and above, Salicylic 30%, Jessner's peel, combination peels like CO₂ (dry ice), and jessner's using several layers or more. These peels are excellent for many skin conditions including tattoo removal, deep acne scars, discoloration, rough dull skin, white spots, dark spots, and much more. As mentioned previously, the results are excellent with these peels, and goals can be easily achieved at a much faster rate if the patient is willing to deal with longer recovery times.

DEEP PEELS

 A deep peel is considered the strongest type of chemical acid peel. This peel penetrates through the epidermis and the papillary dermis area of the skin. These type of peels can be a very complicated procedure. Most patients under-go anesthesia along with cardiac and pulmonary monitoring. Phenol acid is used for this type of procedure. Deep peels normally require an anesthesiologist to be present, and are typically performed in an outpatient surgery center. This type of peel is often used to treat very severe scars, lines, blotchiness, wrinkles, and even pre-cancerous growths. These peels are not recommended for home use, and should only be performed by a licensed professional. The process may take up to 1-2 hours for a full facial peel, or 20-25 minutes for spot treatment. These types of peels produce drastic results, and will change a person's life significantly.
