The last complete set of all 25 issues of Salon: A Journal of Aesthetics. Other complete sets were purchased by the New York Public Library, the library of San Diego State University, and one other university library I unfortunately can’t recall right now.

Perhaps uniquely among zines, each issue of Salon was published as a numbered limited edition, signed by pretty much everyone who was in that particular issue. This was done on the back cover. For the locals, I’d invite them over, or take the stack of covers to them, and get them signed. For each of the out-of-town contributors, I mailed a chunk of labels, and an envelope with the return postage. Not everyone participated in autographing every issue. Some people merely applied their autograph a couple hundred times; others really got into it, making each label a little work of art.

This page lists the artists and writers who appeared in Salon: A Journal of Aesthetics.

This set belonged to Dale Hartman, whose art appeared on several covers, as well as inside many issues of the zine. The cover of #1 is creased because of reading, as are the covers of #2 and #4. #2 and #4 don’t have back covers, which was an economy measure on some of the early issues. #5’s back cover is rumpled. This set wasn’t kept pristine. For instance, one copy has a coffee stain on the back cover – but it’s coffee sloshed from the mug of one of the finest living artists. #10 through 22, and 24 and 25 have autographs, as described above.
