Sansa is the best alternative to the pricy Ipod. This player runs for hours and hours, and sounds great. Has the added bonus of having an FM receiver too!

Includes headphones and sync cable. Add an SD card for additional storage. Flash the firmware with Rockbox, and your storage is only limited by the size of your SD card.
