Sansui TU-717 AM/FM Stereo Tuner
Sansui Detachable Rack Mount Handles
In the mid 1940s Khosaku Kikuchi founded Sansui Electric in the heart of Tokyo Japan.
From the very start Kikuchi was determined to produce products of the highest quality. Initially Sansui specialized in producing radio parts and transformers. The quality of the product was immediately realized and before long they were Japans most prominent supplier.
About the same time as the great American golden era of audio began, Sansui shifted their efforts to that of producing complete audio components. Kikuchi was smitten with the Hi-Fi products streaming in from America & Britain, although he also felt Sansui could be competitive in this industry. Like his American/British counterparts he had a belief that designing and constructing components to the highest quality possible would establish a reputation and the profits would follow. This proved to be a difficult for a company based in Japan. While the common belief in the day was Japanese manufacturers were inferior, largely because most were producing copycat components of much less quality, this was not true of Sansui. In fact, Sansui went through great efforts to continually introduce new technology to the marketplace and prided themselves on the high level of fidelity their components produced..
By the 1970s Sansui started to gain much deserved acceptance by the audio elite. With proprietary technology such as Diamond Differential DC Circuitry, and high quality circuit designs featuring Toroidal & El-Core Transformers with custom made electrolytic capacitors featuring huge capacitance levels, they were getting hard to ignore. Sansui devoted a large percentage of their resources into research and development. They whole-heartedly pursed silicon transistor technology, and their efforts directly influenced its fruition into a musically enjoyable technology. The components built by Sansui from the 60s to the mid 80s represent the finest they had to offer, a line of components that never quite got the recognition they deserved, although are being re-discovered today in an era where this degree of corporate pride is but a distant memory.
If there was one area of the hi-fi componentry where the Japanese manufactures had an obvious dominance it was with FM/AM tuners. Japanese manufacturers such as Kenwood, Pioneer and Sansui had a knack for extracting the highest level of fidelity from airborne frequency waves, and they produced many amazing quality tuners that did just that.
The TU-717 descended from a long line of notable Sansui tuners. It was introduced in 1977 with a production run until 1979. It is a really great sounding tuner that could be compared to other notable classics that cost considerably more. It portrays the FM band with a level of fidelity few tuners can, tonal quality is natural and bold, music is rendered full of life, sonically portraying the full width and depth of the dynamic range. With proper reception the soundstage is amazingly depicted and sharply focused. Some of its many features and functions include:
Precision FM Front End The extraordinary tonal quality of the Sansui TU-717 begins here. Cross-modulation and interference are avoided in the FM front-end using a low-noise Dual-Gate MOS FET RF amp and an innovatively designed frequency-linear, wide gap 4-gang variable capacitor of high precision. The 50dB Quieting Sensitivity is an excellent 34.0dBf for stereo
Low Distortion IF Section Tonal quality is further enhanced by flattening transient group delay and phase distortion to achieve higher selectivity with lower distortion in the FM IF section. The real test of IF circuitry comes when inputs from your antenna vary unpredictably in level. The Tu-717 features linear-phase ceramic filters with low group-delay distortion, two Sansui patented Group Delay Equalizers, and an array of low group-delay ICs all of which lend to its high selectivity, outstanding reception and reproduction.
Wide Range Ratio Detector One of the most important factors in pure musical reproduction in transient response. The TU-717 utilizes a innovative wide range ratio detector in the FM discriminator. Keeping detection distortion to a minimum and contributing to improved linearity and a higher S/N.
Low-Distortion PLL MPX Demodulator
FM Wide/Narrow Bandwidth Selector In normal operation you'll use the WIDE mode to maximize potential sound quality in FM broadcasts which can be received without excessive interference. But when reception difficulties threaten to destroy musical quality entirely, switch to NARROW. In the latter case, the station you want is pulled through the' interference, with rejection and suppression ratios high, by special circuitry in the IF section
FM Muting Switch in the muting to end annoying inter-station noise as you tune. Lo-fi signals are eliminated.
Calibration Tone This switch sends a 400Hz "test signal" to the tuner's outputs to permit you to adjust recording levels on connected decks, etc.
FM Noise Canceller FM signals too weak for respectable hi-fi reproduction in stereo are processed for more listenable quality when you use this switch.
Adjustable Output Level
Multi voltage An internal voltage switch allows you to simply and quickly adjust voltage requirements for any country. 100/120/220/240 50/60Hz
And Much More!

Condition:
Tuner has been tested and it is operating nicely. It sounds great on both channels. All features and functions are working including all lamps and meters. Cosmetically unit has some scratches on the cover, a scuff on the dial glass and some ware and tear. It also does not have the feet, as it was used in a rack mount configuration.
This is a No Reserve Auction so it will go to the highest bidder.
