Sanzo Wada Japanese Woodcut "A Story Teller"
The item being offered is an original Japanese woodcut print by Sanzo Wada, Tokyo & Nishinomiya, ca. 1883 - 1967. The title of the print is "A Story Teller" ("Kamishibai"). I have also seen it titled "Picture Story Show". I am not sure of the publisher, but it was probably Kyoto Hanga-In, ca. 1954 - 1956, and it also is probably from the "Continuing Sketches of Showa Era Occupations" series. The print is signed within the block by the artist with Sanzo seal. The print is matted and framed in what appears to a real bamboo wood frame. There is a wood, likely Luan, backer, and a sticker from the frame shop which reads K. Ishiwata & Co. No. 14 Ishikawa machi Nakaku, Yokohama Pictures and Frames Maker. The visible image part of the print measures approximately 10⅛" x 13⅝", and the frame measures 15⅛" x 18⅝". The print is in very good condition with light foxing within the image. I have not removed the backer to see if there is a publisher's and printer's seal in the margin. Any distortion or shading in my images is simply caused by the glass in the frame.
