Though this comprehensive 8-page Navy register is not specifically dated, I was able to determine that it was published in 1937 or 1938 by using the list of vessels then under construction. The USS NORTH CAROLINA, for example, was laid in 1937 and launched in June of 1940. Perhaps of more interest, however, is the listing for the submarines SS SCULPIN and the ill-famed SS SQUALUS, which sunk off the New Hampshire coast during sea trials in 1939; hence she was not in commission at the time of publication of this register. By way of interest, the SQUALUS was ultimately salvaged, refurbished, and renamed SS SAILFISH. And as the fates would have it, the SS SCULPIN, one of the other submarines cited on the list, was involved in the rescue of the surviving crewmembers of SQUALUS. (I had the distinct privilege of knowing and working with one of those SQUALUS survivors, a sailor of the first order.) As an additional point of interest, note the listings of the battleships in commission and recall that many were present, damaged, or sunk at Pearl Harbor. The item measures 6" x 9". All pages are present snd show no tears, though there is a vertical crease. Buyer pays $2.25 |
