Senufo Rhythm Pounder Sculpture Carving Traditions "Among the most famous statues of African art are a series known as the Pombibele, 'those who give birth'. These are large figures, 120 cm (47+ inches) high, used during the funeral ceremonies of Poro society members. In the central Senufo area, they are left standing in the middle of the ceremonial ground, while in the southern Senufo area, they are carried and then pounded on the ground, providing rhythm for the dancers. This ceremonial use led to the calling of these statues by the popular name of 'rhythm pounders'. Smaller such statues representing divination figures or nature spirits have also been made. When carved in pairs, they symbolize the primordial couple - an ideal Senufo nuclear family who represents its ancestors."
Senufo Tribal History An extremely large tribe, the one and a half million Senufo peoples inhabit vast areas of Cote d'Ivoire, Mali, and Burkina Faso. Primarily farmers who occasionally hunt, the Senufo villagers are governed by councils of elders, lead by elected chiefs. Men of the important Poro society reinforce tribal unity through ceremonial ritual, while they train and initiate the young tribal males from age seven and up. According to Bacquart, "Senufo theology is based on Koulotiolo, a powerful god, and Katieleo, a goddess mother, who through the rituals of the Poro society, regenerate the world." Senufo art was among the first recognized and admired by the Western world.
