About Us

I started out as a wireworker. I'd always been artistic, but working with wire was What I Did. I loved to wrap wire around stone, and I played with how far from the controlled style I was taught I could get without crashing and burning the piece. How spontaneous could I make this thing? When was the last possible moment I could change it? What would make it come alive? I learned to cut stone so that each piece would be my creation from start to finish. I cut my first rocks in a muddy glass baking dish with nail files from the local beauty store. I bought a lapidary machine (Beloved Genie) as a box of parts. The wheels were shot and expensive to replace, so my dream of a piece being mine from start to finish was rudely interrupted by the reality of hard rocks on worn wheels. The stones were working me, training me to listen to what could be done with them given the tools at hand. When I got new wheels, those lessons stuck. The rocks cut themselves and I'm just the one covered in mud. By the time a stone is ready to set in wire, I've shaped it according to its preference with an eye toward where wire will go. The wire goes on without much thought, an interesting engineering project in which a bunch of two-dimensional things somehow move into the third. It feels more like circuitry than sculpture. The process of decorating it is more studied, less automatic. I use colors and shapes from the stones themselves and the textures and rhythms of growing things and swirling water. I am honored to find beauty in the simplest rocks and the slightest curve of wire. I love everything about this work, from the muddy saw to the colorful stones and gems laid out like paint squeezed onto a palette. I hope to pass that delight along. It feels like magic.
