It also has an engraving on the back that says " John M. Miller As a reminder of our friendship over many long years of hard work, Struggles, Discouragement, Disappointment, and Success. Yet to me, a memory of a sincere friendship. " Here is the story of the Jefferson Cups. In 1806 Thomas Jefferson was willed by his friend and teacher, George Wythe, two large silver cans or beakers of about 20 ounces weight and of an undetermined design. After using them for several years Jefferson sent them to John Letelier, a Richmond silversmith, with directions to make eight smaller cups of about 5 ounces weight and 2-5/8 inches high with rounded bottoms. He further stipulated that they be gilded inside and four to be marked " G.W. to T.J." and four " T.J." The completed cups were recieved at Monticello in October, 1810 and were used there until Jefferson's death in 1826. After this seven of the cups were distributed by Martha Randolph, his daughter, among seven of her children. The eighth cup is believed to have been given to Dr. Robley Dunglison, Jefferson's physician. Of the original eight Jefferson cups seven have been located and two of them have come back to Monticello. These cups are a reproduction of one of the two now at Monticello and has been approved by the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation. This set is very very old and in absolute fantastic condition.
