The Civil War: A Narrative (1958-1974) is a three
volume, 2,968-page, 1.2 million-word history of the American Civil
War by Shelby Foote. Although previously known as a novelist, Foote is most
famous for this non-fictional narrative history. While it touches on political
and social themes, the main thrust of the work is military history.
Included in this auction are the first two volumes
- Fort Sumter to Perryville (1st Edition, 3rd
Printing, 1958) and Fredericksburg to Meridian
(1st Edition, 1st Printing, 1963). Both are fantastic
collector's items!

Volume I - Fort Sumter to
Perryville: Hardcover in original jacket. 840 pages.
"THIRD PRINTING" is stated on the copyright page. Original
price of $10.00 is intact on the front jacket flap. Jacket has aged
moderately well but shows some signs of wear. Some rubbing and small tears
on some edges with minimal paper loss, some light toning throughout, all flap
corners intact. Book is in VERY GOOD+ condition and is square and
tightly bound with crisp pages inside. Original gray cloth-bound
boards with gilt spine lettering, some light bumping and rubbing on corners of
boards and spine. Pages have navy blue top stain and are clean aside
from some light toning on the end pages and page edges and a
small, faint dampstain on the top page edge. No stray marks or
inscriptions from previous owners.
Volume II - Fredericksburg to
Meridian: Hardcover in original jacket. 988 pages.
"FIRST PRINTING" is stated on the copyright page. Original
price has been clipped from front jacket flap. Jacket has aged moderately
well but shows some signs of wear. Some rubbing and small tears on some
edges with minimal paper loss, some light toning throughout, small dampstains on
bottom edge of back cover, other three flap corners intact. Book is
in VERY GOOD- condition and is square and relatively tightly bound
with crisp pages inside. Original gray cloth-bound boards with gilt
spine lettering, some light rubbing on bottom edges of boards and spine.
There are splits in the gutters between the title pages and the back end pages,
but all pages remain present and securely attached. Pages have navy
blue top stain and are clean aside from a previous owner's personal library
bookplate on the center of the front paste-down page.
These
books are in great shape for their age and they would make a wonderful addition
to any collection!
