You are bidding on approximately 2.5 lbs of Raw Shetland Sheep Wool. This fleece is not cleaned, and will contain some vegetable matter - hay or grass - which is picked up by the sheep. Our sheep are sheared professionally. Pictured above is a sampling of the variation in color that you will receive. I will include instructions on how to wash raw wool in the washing machine. This would be an excellent gift for the felter or spinner with the long winter days ahead!
The Shetland is the smallest of the British breeds, found mostly in the Shetland Islands. Believed to be of Scandinavian origin, most probably brought to those shores by the Vikings, who settled there over a thousand years ago. They may have inter-bred with primitive sheep already in the islands. This cannot be proven, but they retain many characteristics of the wild sheep. They are small bodied animals with a distinctive face and nose, bright eyes, small erect ears and usually wool on the forehead. The legs are fine and of medium length. A distinguishing feature is the tail being fluke shaped, broad at the base and tapering to the point. Rams have nice round horns while ewes are horn-less.
One of the marvelous aspects of the Shetland is its variability within the breed. A small spinner's flock can produce ultra-fine Shetland yarn for hand knits as well as coarser, but equally gorgeous yarns suitable for sturdy socks and warm outer garments and remarkable tapestry yarns.
Shetland wool comes in one of the widest ranges of color of any breed. Everything from the purest white to the deepest coal black.
Fleeces usually weigh between 2 to 4 pounds, but 5 and 6 pound fleeces are not uncommon. Typically, on the Shetland Islands, the fleece staple length is 2 to 4 1/2 inches. In some flocks, however, longer staple lengths of 6inches are observed.
