Reviews
Simply Red's superb Greatest Hits is a fine collection that captures all of their big hits, U.S. and European, up through 1996. The songs come together seamlessly on this album, with ample amounts of soul, pop, and dance influences. Included are the act's early hits, which resonated high on American charts, especially their two number one hits, "Holding Back the Years" and "If You Don't Know Me by Now." After the release of their critically acclaimed fourth album, Stars, their popularity waned in the U.S. while it soared to new heights in the rest of the world. Five songs are included from that album, and the caliber of these songs leads one to ponder why their chart-topping success did not continue in the U.S. This album closes with two tracks from their Life album -- the wonderful and sarcastic "So Beautiful" and their international number-one hit "Fairground," which barely bubbled under the American Hot 100. A cover of the Aretha Franklin hit "Angel" (produced by Wyclef Jean) is this collection's only new contribution. Mick Hucknall's voice can go from a soulful snarl ("It's Only Love," "Something Got Me Started") to being beautifully understated ("For Your Babies"), and his ample talents are well-showcased on this top-notch collection, which also serves to heighten the disparity between American and European popular music.
