This machine sews, and sews darn well. This is a Singer Stylist Model 457, circa 1966. It’s a great machine – at least I think so. Until recently I traveled quite often for work. This Stylist almost always made the trip with me. It’s a manageable weight, it’s self-contained, it’s dependable, durable, and it’s always gotten the job done for me. It sews quite well with smooth action and plenty of power. It’s quite too. It’s a three stitch machine: straight stitch, zig-zag, and blind hem. Those are the stitches you really need. More importantly, it makes those stitches very well in any type of fabric.
Bobbins are class 66, drop in type; easy to find and affordable. Bobbin winder is on the front of the machine. The spool pins are located on top, two pins for double needle sewing.
I’ve used this machine for garment construction from silk neckties to heavy weight denim jeans. I’ve sewn knits, wovens, synthetics, and even apparel weight leather on this machine with no trouble whatsoever. I’ve pieced patchwork with this machine. I’ve attached a walking foot and quilted with this machine. It thrives on use, is well mannered, and it needs a new home. Machines thrive on use, and I don’t have the room for another in home machine. I don’t want this one to sit around unused, so, with some wistfulness, I’m offering this machine with all the goodies from my traveling bag:
· The Singer case – working latches, no rust, no cracks, no stress fissures
· Upgraded foot control – I replaced the carbon foot control with a Singer electronic foot control. This allows for the full power of the motor at any sewing speed.
· Singer Professional Buttonholer for Vertical Needle Machines – forms perfect buttonholes every time. This buttonholer utilizes the zig-zag ability of the machine, so no jerking of the fabric as the buttonhole is stitched. The attachment makes sixteen different buttonholes in four styles: straight, keyhole/eyelet end, and bound buttonholes as well as eyelets. The buttonholer is complete, in the original box, with all the templates, the feed cover plate, the attaching screw, and, most importantly, the instruction manual.
· Singer five stitch ruffler – forms ruffles, pleats, and tucks as it sews.
· Snap on foot adapter with snap on straight stitch, general purpose, and zipper foot
· Button sewing foot
· Satin stitch foot
· Adjustable multi-slot binder attachment – for applying seam/bias tape, piping, etc.
· Gathering foot
· Narrow hem foot
· Flat felling foot – gives perfect flat felled seams without pins and pressing
· Blind hem foot
· Edgestitch foot – great for topstitching
· Pintuck foot – uses double needle to set pintucks/airtucks into fabric
· Quilting guide
· Open toe foot – a must for free motion embroidery and sewing
· Feed dog cover – disable feed dog action for free motion work
· Seam guide
This machine really is the total package. If you’re a beginner, then it’s everything you’ll need for just about any project you undertake. If you’re an intermediate sewer, then it’s got the tools to take your sewing to the next level. If you’re already at the next level, looking for a second machine or, as I used it, a traveling machine, then all you need is here. Somewhere along the way I managed to misplace the manual. You can find several sources for replacement manuals on line, even downloaded directly to your computer. I encourage you to replace the manual. You’ll learn and benefit much from doing so.
