Bidding has ended on this item. Item:Small Old Splint Oak Buttocks Basket w/ Rattan Weavers |
This one is so nice! It is a beautifully woven small-to-medium sized splint oak buttocks basket with a bentwood hardwood handle which skims close to the body of the basket. The weavers on the sides are of rattan - the same material as was used to create the Nantucket baskets of old. This is an older basket, and was probably woven in the Northeast US at the same time as the classic Nantucket baskets were made. It may have been made as a child's berry basket. It has a beautiful symmetrical shape, nice detailing, and classic construction. It will make a terrific addition to someone's collection.
The basket, as noted, is a nice small size, yet larger than a miniature. It measures 7½" x 5½" across at the rim and 3" deep (5" to the top of the handle.) This basket is in absolutely pristine condition with no breaks or other damage. The handle, base, and the narrow rattan splints on the sides are all in perfect shape. See photos, as they give a true picture of the basket's condition. This basket is guaranteed to be an older one, has a very nice patina, and makes a beautiful piece for display.
