Up for auction is a nicely crafted small round Papago Indian basket, coiled in a subtle pattern with yucca wraps over a natural colored background. This basket is in the shape of a small olla or urn - it must have been difficult to get the curved sides and flared rim to come out just right. The weaver's name is Sally Jose, and she is an extremely talented craftsperson. These tourist items were (and still are) popular with visitors to the region, and this is an appealing one from the latter part of the century. Notice the attractive round symmetrical shape this basket has and how small and finely woven the coiling and wraps are. The rim end is nicely tapered and finished off. This is a great example of Papago handiwork.

The basket, as noted is small and finely made, measuring 3" in diameter at the widest point, and with a classic olla shape, just over 2" deep. This nice basket is in pristine condition, with no breaks or any damage whatever. It is old enough that the yucca is beginning to lose its greenish color, and has begun to turn a nice golden brown color, which will continue to deepen over time. This is a lovely example of innovative Native American weaving and will make a beautiful addition to someone's collection of contemporary Southwest Indian baskets.
