Colorado Century of Progress Medal, Silver Type IV variety

For Century of Progress Exposition

1933 CO, Silver, 25 mm, HK 870, Type IV

High Grade So Called Dollar - NGC MS64 - Amazing Toning

NGC Graded MS64.  Very nicely toned and high grade silver So Called Dollar.  This medal has a combination of colors and toned in different spots that can be seen in the pics below. Overall the surfaces present dark silver and some slight red/blue color, nice toning in both the obverse and reverse .

Truly a beautiful SCD, and given the strong prices recently saw in silver SCDs auction sales, this will be a great addition to a high grade collection of silver SCDs. As of today, Mint state silver SCDs prices range from $500 to $4000+ depending on the rarity and popularity.  Free shipping/insurance offered this time around.

A very high grade So Called (and "Scarce" as such) Dollar/Medal that will be hard to upgrade and match.

History and Significance

Century Of Progress Exposition 1933

This medal is for the Century of Progress Exposition of 1933, the name of a World's Fair held in Chicago, Illinois from 1933 to 1934 to celebrate the city's centennial.

The theme of the fair was technological innovation, with its motto "Science Finds, Industry Applies, Man Conforms" and its architectural symbol was the Sky Ride. An issue occurred where the Colorado State Legislature failed to gather appropriate funds for participation. Many Denver and other civic organizations believed that Colorado’s non-appearance would be detrimental to its industrial welfare. About $60,000 was estimated to be necessary to assure proper representation.

There was a plan to produce and sell "Colorado Dollars" in order to raise funds, and on Feb. 1, 1933, the Commission announced that one-ounce discs of pure silver would be sold at $1 each. The Planchets were made by Sachs-Lawlor Co., Denver, and were struck by The H. H. Tammen Co.

One of the highlights of the 1933 World's Fair was the arrival of the German airship Graf Zeppelin on October 26, 1933.
