The control panel consists of two rows – a top row of indicator lights and a bottom row of push buttons. Each is designated with an icon, so it’s easy to remember which does which. On top, the five indicator lights notify you when the beans are low, the water level in the reservoir is low, the machine is heating up or on standby, the dregs drawer is full, and when descaling is needed. On the bottom, the five buttons activate cleaning, brewing using the grounds in the bypass doser, coffee brewing, espresso brewing, and hot water dispensing.
The Palazzo’s dual Rapid Steam boiler system allows you to switch easily between brewing and steaming. These stainless steel boilers are durable and provide excellent heat retention for a consistently brewed shot of espresso. The two boilers result in less down time in between brewing and steaming, a great feature especially when you’re entertaining.
The machine is ready to brew when the heat up indicator light is steadily illuminated. To brew, press the coffee or espresso brewing button. The Solis Palazzo will then grind the beans, tamp them, and brew them. If you want to brew two of your beverage, press the button twice. If you prefer a coffee blend that isn’t the kind in the hopper, press the bypass doser button located to the left of the beverage buttons, add ground coffee, and then press your beverage button. The machine will brew using the grounds in the doser instead of what is already in the hopper.
The bean hopper protects a half-pound of coffee from going stale by sealing the off from sealing the beans from the damaging effects of moisture and air. When you press one of the brew buttons, beans travel from the hopper to the conical burr grinder, which crushes beans evenly and consistently, resulting in the blend suited for your taste. Adjust the grinder knob located in the hopper from 1 (fine) to 18 (coarse) to get the right setting for your coffee blend and preferred drink – always do this when the grinder is running.
A pregrind function allows you to set the machine to grind immediately after your drink is brewed, so the grounds are all ready for the next drink. This is convenient if you need to prepare several coffees in quick succession, but since coffee beans go stale more quickly after they are ground we recommend leaving this function off.
To give you more control over how your drinks taste, the Solis Palazzo features an adjustable coffee doser. You have the ability to vary the amount of espresso used in each drink from 6 to 9 grams simply by turning the knob located inside the bean hopper to the + or – sign.
The espresso and coffee buttons can be programmed to dispense your preferred volume. Just press and hold the button of the beverage you want to program, and release the button once you have you desired amount. The machine is now programmed to dispense that volume each time you brew.
Pre-infusion, or pre-brewing as it is sometimes called, involves moistening the grounds before brewing begins, allowing the flavors and aromas to leech through the grounds more deeply. You can turn this function on or off using the control panel as well.
Brewing espresso into a warm cup preserves the temperature of the beverage, giving you more time to enjoy its nuances and flavors. The cup warmer on top of the Solis Palazzo is heated using residual heat from the 1250 watt boiler, so you don’t have to remember to turn it on or off – when the boiler heats up, the cup warmer heats up too. Leave your cups on the cup warmer for a great display and espresso with a consistent temperature.
Features & Benefits: Frothing and Hot Water
Steam Wand
The steam wand is located to the right of the coffee dispenser, and allows you to foam and steam milk for a cappuccino, latte, or macchiato. Press the steam button, the furthermost right button on the control panel, and wait for the machine to warm up to steam temperature. Thanks to the dual boiler system, this will only take a few moments – you’ll know the machine is ready when the center indicator light is steadily lit. Open the steam knob on the right side of the machine to begin steaming, and close the knob and press the steam button again when you are finished. An included cappuccino nozzle on the steam wand makes frothing even easier and can be removed for steaming, or when cleaning is necessary. Remember to wipe off the steam wand after you’re finished to prevent milk residue from building up.
Hot Water on Demand
The steam wand also dispenses hot water – convenient for tea, instant soup, or a café americano. As long as the machine is at brewing temperature, you can open the steam knob and hot water will be dispensed out of the steam wand. Once you have your desired amount, close the steam knob to stop the flow of water.
Features & Benefits: Care, Maintenance & Other
Water System
The removable 64 oz water reservoir should be rinsed out regularly under running water for the freshest tasting coffee – just remove the reservoir from the back of the machine. The filter located inside the water tank should also be rinsed and replaced regularly as well. When the water tank needs to be refilled, the empty water reservoir indicator light will illuminate steadily. The Solis Palazzo includes a test strip for water hardness, so you can test your tap water and program it into the machine using the control panel. Based on this reading, the machine will alert you when descaling is necessary (about once every 3-4 months).
Internal Cleaning
When the machine turns on, it runs a rinse cycle so your espresso is brewed with fresh water. For a deeper cleaning, add an included cleaning tablet into the water tank and press the clean button for 5 seconds. When the clean button goes out, cleaning is finished.
Machine Maintenance
The exterior of the machine can be wiped down with a damp cloth when needed. Your dump box for the spent coffee grounds should be emptied when the indicator light illuminates, and remember to rinse it under warm running water. About once a week, you should clean out residue and coffee oils from the coffee spout by running hot water through the pipes Just set the machine to brew using the bypass doser, but don’t add any ground coffee, and hot water will flow through the pipes. The brew unit should also be cleaned weekly. Open the service door and remove the drip tray and grounds container. Use the key to loosen the brew unit, then remove it and clean under warm running water. Let it dry completely before returning it to the machine. The drip tray slides out easily, and should be removed and rinsed when the drip tray level indicator becomes visible.
Accessories
The Solis Palazzo comes with a brew group key, a cleaning brush, a coffee measure for the bypass doser, a water hardness test strip, and cleaning tablets. |
