Geological/ mineralogical Description

The history of the Solnhofen Natural Stone - also called Solnhofen Lime Stone or Solnhofen Plate - began about 150 millions years ago in the era of dinosaurs. In a subtropic sea, stacked lime sediments were formed, which hardened through millions of years and which are extracted today as so called Solnhofen Natural Stone in the quarrying area between Kehlheim and Solnhofen in Bavaria (Germany).

The extraction of the limestone plates requires a high skill and is hand-crafted only, as it was done a hundred years ago. In current times, which are dominated by artificial products, the Solnhofer Natural Stone with its outstanding biological building qualities contrasts with the mass of artificial stones.

The Solnhofen Natural Stone achieved world prominence by its fossil discoveries. The most known fossil is without doubts the Archaeopteryx. The Solnhofen Natural Stone grew in Upper Jura about 150 millions of years ago in a lagoon which was separated from the open sea by reefs. In the lagoon, in regular intervals fallouts of lime took place, which forms the fine layers of the natural stone. This lime preserved animals of several different habitats, e.g. fish from the open sea, cancers which lived on the seaground, or also flying reptils (pterosaurs), the kings of the air in Jura era.

But in contrast to the diversity of the exhibits in the museum, fossils in quarries are very rare.

Big and representative fossils are extremely rare and the originals are nearly priceless.
