Sony PMW-EX1 HD XD-CAM Digital Video Camcorder + EXTRAS

This is a used Sony PMW-EX1 camera with extras.

I bought this new in March of 2008 from B&H Photo-Video. It’s an absolutely wonderful camera which I’m selling only because my family has debts to pay off and we need the money. I used the camera to shoot a full-length independent feature (still being edited) and three corporate videos, all here in eastern Idaho. The camera has 165 hours on it and therefore I won’t list it as “like new,” but it’s in remarkable condition. Everything works; nothing is broken. There are no scratches on the lens, no marks on the body, and nothing missing. And in addition to the camera and accessories in the original packaging, I’m including a carrying case (worn but fully functional – see photos), two 8GB Sony SxS Pro cards, and a Sony extended warranty (up to $10,000 coverage - expires on March 24, 2011) for which I paid an additional $159.95, also from B&H.

I LOVE this camera! The half-inch CMOS sensors are the bomb! I shot pretty much all the time in 1080P mode, 24 fps, but there are lots of other ways to shoot, of course. Each 8GB card holds up to 25 minutes of ultra-high-quality HD video. When one card is full, the camera automatically switches to the other one. If you’re in the middle of a take, it does it on the fly, splitting the resulting file in half seamlessly and effortlessly. You can leave one card in the camera and pop the other one into your laptop. My standard Dell laptop worked just fine for this – no need for extra add-ons or anything. The software works great and quickly gives you an amazing-looking output file, ready for editing with any standard program. I happen to use Apple Final Cut Studio on a Macintosh, but PC-based stuff works just as well. I shot a two-hour dance performance live and was able to pretty much keep going without any serious breaks or pauses.

Also, I was able to shoot lots of so-called depth-of-field shots by setting up further away from the subject and zooming in (as long as the background wasn’t too close). This camera has an outstanding lens!

• The camera.. Sony PMW-EX1 XDCAM HD Camcorder. Very good condition; 165 system hours. Everything works as it should; nothing is scratched or broken. Lens is perfect.

• Accessories.. Comes with the original Sony battery (still holds more than two-hour charge), battery charger and power adapter (to run the camera via a plug instead of with the battery), audio/visual cable, original remote control (works great), Sony 132-page manual (definitely used, but intact and fully readable), original Sony software disc, and Sony demo footage DVD.

• Memory cards.. Included are 2 8GB Sony SxS Pro memory cards – a $500 value.

• Carrying case.. This third-party case has seen a lot of use and is definitely not new – see pictures below. But it functions perfectly well. It has wheels and a handle (which I almost never use – no need), and the clasps close securely. A bracket on the bottom is missing, so the case, when stood up, leans somewhat – see picture below. Also, the foam squares in the case are loosely arranged – I never took the time to glue them into place. I have some extras, which I will include in the case, so you can use the ones you want and glue them into permanent positions, if you choose.

• The original box.. I’ll pack the camera into the original box when I send it to you. Two things – one end of the box has a few minor holes in it – see photo below. Also, I removed and used a proof-of-purchase sticker from the side of the box (see below) to take advantage of a rebate offer for one of the 8GB cards, so it is now missing and has been used.

• Sony warranty.. At the time I bought the camera (March 2008), I paid $159.95 extra for a 3-year Sony extended warranty which covers repairs up to $10,000. I have not had to use it, but the peace of mind has been worth the cost. I will transfer the remaining time on this warranty (expires in March 2011) to the high bidder and have Sony send you the new papers. I have the original warranty papers and receipts.
