Title: Sotheby's Carpets From the Estate Of Vojtech Blau
Auction held in: New York
Sale Date: 12/14/06
No. of Lots: 108
No. of Pages: 127
Condition: Excellent
On December 14th, 2006, Sothebys will offer Carpets from the Estate of Vojtech Blau, one of the most knowledgeable carpet and tapestry dealers in New York. The sale, which is estimated to bring $1.8/2.6 million*, will include an exceptional group of rugs and carpets from Mr. Blaus collection, including colorful and graphic, abstract examples of tribal and village rugs from the Caucasus and Turkey, alongside the very formal, more finely woven rugs from the cities of Persia and India. This is a rare opportunity for collectors to acquire the last carpets from Mr. Blaus Collection; going forward, the business, which continues to thrive under the direction of Mr. Blaus daughter Simona, will focus on tapestries alone. The rugs and carpets in this collection are a testament to his highly developed eye and the depth of his art-historical knowledge and taste, representing a variety of weavings that were produced in many places under differing circumstances at varying times.
A Sotheby's Spokes person: “Sothebys is proud to offer this collection of rugs and carpets from an unparalleled dealer and remarkable man, Vojtech Blau. This is a unique opportunity for aficionados to acquire a carpet from such an illustrious source, marking the end of an era in the carpet world.”
A Holocaust survivor, Mr, Blau came to the United States in 1962 from Prague, Czechoslovakia. With 15 years of experience in the field, a discerning eye and a keen business sense, yet few tangible assets, he founded Vojtech Blau Inc. After six years of trading, he had built up his business and opened a gallery in the former Parke Bernet building at 980 Madison Avenue in New York, establishing a close working relationship with Sothebys predecessor, Parke Bernet galleries. Over the years Mr. Blau earned an unrivalled reputation in the field and many considered him the most knowledgeable carpet and tapestry dealer in New York. His pre-eminence in the field was acknowledged by his peers with his appointment to Vice President of the Art and Antique Dealers League of America of which he was a member for over 30 years. Mr. Blau, dediand tapestries as serious works of art, was passionate and generous in sharing his deep knowledge. This enthusiasm earned him the respect and loyalty of clientele such as the Rockefellers as well as prestigious institutions including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the U.S. Department of State and the White House. In the 1990s Mr. Blau and his daughter, Simona, moved the company to the Fuller Building, and in keeping with both their interests, chose to focus the business on tapestries. The company of Vojtech Blau Inc. continues to thrive under the direction of Simona and has an extensive inventory of 16th to 18th century tapestries as well as those of 20th century design masters.
A highlight of the collection and a truly rare work of art is Mughal animal and palmette carpet, probably Lahore, North India, Jahangir period (1605-1627), approximately 11ft. 9in. by 5ft. 3ins., which retains brilliant color despite its great age (pictured on page 1, est. $200/300,000). Another cornerstone of the sale is a Northwest Persian gallery carpet, dated 1222, approximately 18 feet 8 inches by 8 feet 9 inches, estimated to bring $100/150,000 (pictured here). The carpet was published in F.R. Martins A History of Oriental Carpets before 1800, Vienna 1906-1908, one of the earliest books on the study of oriental carpets, a copy of which will also be offered in this auction (est. $2/3,000. Other highlights include a Heriz silk carpet, Northwest Persia, late 19th century, approximately 13ft. 11in. by 11ft. 2in., finely woven and in near original pile and condition (pictured here, est. $100/150,000), and a Heriz silk rug, Northwest Persia, circa 1880, approximately 6ft. 6in. by 4ft. 6in., extremely finely woven with a handsome floral trellis design (est. $60/80,000). Other highlights include a Kazak rug Southwest Caucasus early 19th century, approximately 7ft. 4in. by 4ft. 11in., with a striking design and vivid color and in superb condition in spite of its age (pictured here, est. $30/40,000); a Senna prayer rug, Northwest Persia, circa 1875, approximately 5ft. 4in. by 4ft., which bears a design most often found on a Senna kilim (flatweave) rather than on a pile rug such as this (est. $15/20,000); and a “Mohtashem” Kashan rug, Central Persia, circa 1890, approximately 6ft 8in. by 4ft 7in., with subtle coloring and an intricate design woven in lustrous wool and complete with its original end finishes and silk side cords (est. $20/30,000). Rounding out the sale are two very rare “large-knotted” Ming carpet fragments that bear the distinguished provenance of the Estate of Frank Michaelian, an earlier pre-eminent dealer and a mentor to Mr Blau: a Dragon carpet fragment, Ming dynasty, China, circa 1600, approximately 4ft. 6in. by 3ft. 7in. (est. $10/ 15,000), and another Ming carpet fragment, China, circa 1600, approximately 3ft. 11in. by 2ft. 10in. (est. $8/12,000). Credit: Sotheby's Press.
