Sotheby’s Sale of Antiquities Totals $8,899,377

Exceeding Expectations

-- Three Lots Bring More than $1 Million --

December 10, 2008 - New York, NY – Today, before a standing-room-only crowd, Sotheby’s sale of Antiquities totalled $8,899,377, exceeding the high estimate of $6.9 million*. Three works sold for more than $1 million, led by the Egyptian Greywacke Figure of a Man, late 26th/30th Dynasty, circa 600-342 B.C. which sold for $1,650,500 (est. $600/900,000). The sale was 82.8% percent sold by lot and 89.4% sold by value. Richard M. Keresey and Florent Heintz, experts in charge of the sale said, “We were very gratified with the results of today’s sale. Rare objects of great quality and with good provenance sold extremely well, as well in fact as they did in our June sale. The overall total of $8.9 million was nearly identical.”

The top-selling lot was followed by another outstanding Egyptian work, the Nummulitic Limestone Figure of a Princess, Amarna, 18th Dynasty, Reign of Akhenaten, circa 1347-1345 B.C. which achieved $1,082,500 (est. $400/600,000). The Large Cycladic Marble Figure of a Goddess, Early Bronze Age II, circa 2500-2400 B.C., doubled a high estimate of $500,000 to sell for $1,022,500.

Among the Western Asiatic Antiquities, strong prices – all multiples of their high estimates - were achieved for the Assyrian Gypsum Alabaster Foundation Plaque, reign of Tukulti-Ninurta I, circa 1243-1207 B.C. which sold for $932,500 (est. $150/250,000) and the Copper Figure of a Deity, Uruk IV, circa 3300-3100 B.C. which brought $782,500 (est. $200/300,000). The striking Neolithic Stone Figure of a Woman, circa 1st half of the 6th Millennium B.C., brought more than double its high estimate of $50,000, selling for $134,500.
