Section Devoted to Old Master Paintings Exceeds Expectations
With a Total of $10.98 Million (£6,847,134, €7,747,490)
New York, NY - June 4, 2009 - Sotheby’s sale of Old Master Paintings, European Sculpture & Antiquities in New York brought a total of $14,223,575, nearly reaching the high estimate (est. $9.7/14.5 million). Leading off the sale was a section of Old Master Paintings which exceeded expectations bringing a total of $10,980,750 against a highestimate of $9.7 million. Competition was fierce for an offering of works sold by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to benefit future acquisitions, with multiple bidders participating on nearly each of the 14 lots sold. The group brought a total of $5.8 million, well in excess of the high estimate of $2.9 million, and was led by Pieter de Hooch’s A Woman Handing a Coin to a Serving Woman with a Child which sold for $1,650,500 (est. $400/600,000). The top lot of the section of Old Master Paintings and the entire sale was Frans Post’s The Sugar Mill which more than doubled the high estimate of $500,000 to sell for $1,706,500.
George Wachter, Co-Chairman of Sotheby’s Old Master Paintings Department Worldwide said, “I am very pleased with today’s results. We worked incredibly hard to keep the offering small and focused on quality and managed, in numerous cases, to find not just one bidder, but multiple bidders. For instance, the Frans Post had five different people bidding at $1 million which is remarkable in this environment. While many of the top lots were in the end purchased by dealers, in each case there was aggressive competition from private collectors which is very encouraging. Our formula of offering Old Master Paintings and European Works of Art alongside Antiquities was a success – the works looked great together and we saw significant crossover in the bidding, including the bidders for the top selling Antiquity.”
The section of Antiquities brought a total of $2,879,200 (£1,765,080, €2,031,425), within the pre-sale estimate (est. $2.7/4.1 million). The Neo-Attic Marble Volute Krater formerly in the Barberini Collection in Rome sparked a battle between two bidders driving the final price to $692,500, above a pre-sale estimate of $250/350,000. A Roman Imperial Marble Torso of a God or Hero was also sought-after today selling for $290,500, many multiples of its high estimate (est. $50/80,000). Another highlight from this afternoon’s sale was An Attic Black-figured Amphora and Lid, attributed to the Antimenes Painter which sold for $194,500 (est. $100/150,000). Richard M. Keresey and Florent Heintz, experts in charge of the sale said, “There were a number of strong prices achieved for wonderful objects in today’s sale, and we were encouraged by the number of new buyers in the salesroom.”
