  South Bend Lathe Manual
  How to Run a Lathe

How to Run a Lathe - Instructions on the Care and Operation of a Back Geared Screw Cutting Engine Lathe For the Machinist Apprentice, 32nd Edition originally published by the South Bend Lathe Works in 1935.

This book covers the use and maintenance of the South Bend lathe and many tools and attachments.  This information translates very well to other lathe manufacturers and types including the Atlas lathe (same as Craftsman lathe), mini lathe, hobbiest lathes such as the Taig lathe and Sherline lathe, and even watchmaker lathes. This is the complete 163 page manual so sought after by machinists and hobbiests.

Included in the book are general breakdown and usage of gear and belt driven lathes, screw cutting, indexing, use of collets, face plates, chucks, compound tool rests, tool holders, milling attachments, and just about any other attachment available at the time.  There are great tables for tapers of cuts, cut rates for different materials, pitch and depth of screw threads, and more.  This is an invaluable reference for those using a CNC lathe or doing a conversion as gearing and indexing are still very important.

This electronic publication can be printed at any scale in high resolution or used on your computer.  This allows you to keep a shop copy printed and easily replace pages that you scribble on or get dirty and greasy.  It also allows you to print out specific sections that you want to use and abuse.

This book was painstakingly scanned at high resolution for a clean reproduction by a professional graphic artist.  The CD contains free Adobe Acrobat readers for Windows and Macintosh and there are no printing restrictions for personal use.  This would be a perfect reference for course work in colleges or high schools, home schooling, or hobbyists.  We would be happy to set up a special eBay auction for a bulk rate for schools requiring a quantity of these.
