Asian
Influences & Inspiration |
|
| Many
of the textile collages I create are inspired
by the Asian art displayed in tokonomas
alcoves. Tokonomas were the sacred center
of a traditional Japanese home, and reserved
for treasured items like scrolls or calligraphy,
beautiful kimonos, ikebana flower arrangements,
miniature bonsai trees, and fine ceramics
for tea ceremonies. The items displayed
were changed for special occasions, according
to the season, or to create different settings
and atmospheres. |

Created
in 2002, this is one of my earliest
and favorite patchwork collages. Inspired
by the traditional Attic Window quilt
block, with a patch of flowers representing
a pot of african violets or begonias.
Also of note, the fabric used for the
window portion of the Attic Window quilt
block, reminds me of condensation on
a window during a spring day.

improvisational collage style of composing
allows me the freedom to explore and
discover unexpected evolutions of the
content and meaning behind the metaphorical
imagery.
While
the metaphoric images have specific
meaning to me, they are also enigmatic
in that the viewer can bring their own
personal experience to their interpretation.
A
full-time studio artist, instructor
and lecturer since 1994, Linda’s art
has been exhibited and collected internationally
