Squier Stratocaster Standard Black Made in Japan 1994 HISTORY These guitars in this particular format were made between 1990 and production ceased in 1994 when Fender decided that Fender Japan was to no longer carry on producing guitars under the Squier name. Squier was first introduced as the cheaper alternative to Fender guitars in 1982 with the JV series and the name was initially used to denote guitars exported from Japan by Fender so as not to compete with the American Fenders. Some time around the late eighties, a factory was also set up in Korea producing a cheaper and inferior alternative to the Japanese Squiers. This particular model was produced in 1993 or 1994 which is apparent from the serial number which begins with an 'O.' Please see the Fender website which confirms this: http://www.fender.com/support/japanese_instruments.php. I also purchased one of these guitars new in 1994 which had a 'P' serial number which seems to attest this information. SPECIFICATIONS The specification of this guitar is as follows:
DESCRIPTION I obtained this guitar second hand and this is one of three Japanese Standard Squiers (and another three Silver Series) I have owned from this period. They are exceptional value for money given their excellent playability and standard of construction. This is by far the most resonant example I have owned and have used it extensively in various bands despite being the cheapest guitar I own. I certainly rate it higher than all the Mexican Fender Strats I've played and is certainly comparable to my American Standards. The stock pickups are pretty good and I've not felt the need to upgrade these though they are not quite up to the standard of Fender Texas Specials or equivalent but for the price they're more than acceptable. I've used this guitar mostly in covers bands either through a Line 6 POD or a 90s Korg reissue Vox AC30TB with a Blackstar HT-Dual Valve Distortion pedal and it sounds great! The weight of the guitar is perfect for my needs, not too heavy to cause back pain, and not too light. The neck shape is a wonderfully rounded 'C' shape neck which I've been a massive fan of hence the reason I've purchased so many. The actions reasonably low but could go lower if required and the neck is nice and straight with the truss rod in fine working order should you prefer a different set-up. The tremolo system is standard Fender fare and so works as well as any as long as you use it sensibly! Some graphite from a pencil in the nut slots and some lubricant in the string tree is all that's been required to keep this guitar in tune when using the tremolo (or more correctly, vibrato)! The routing under the scratchplate is what is referred to as the 'swimming pool' variety i.e. it's a large route which can accomodate any combination of pickups (as used on the Fender American Standard Strat for years) unlike the routing which follows the shape of each pickup. If you fancy a humbucker/single coil/humbucker set up on this guitar, simply swap the scratchplate out with another containing that pickup variation and solder the 3 wires in! No body modifications are necessary and it can even accomodate active electronics if required. Another bonus of these guitars! CONDITION I've included as many photos as possible to show the cosmetic condition of the guitar. It's certainly not mint by any means with the worst areas being at the base of the guitar where the paint has worn away. It was in this condition when I acquired it and it's certainly made no difference to how it plays. There are the usual obligatory paint chips of a well used guitar on the body and it's been well used because it's a great playing and sounding guitar. The lacquer on the back of the neck has a satin feel and has discoloured due to use so is slightly darker than the areas the hand does not come into contact with. The pickup covers and knobs have yellowed slightly as many do and for some reason that I cannot remember now, all three controls are labelled 'tone' despite the first potentiometer actually being a master volume control as normal. The frets are in great condition given it's 16 years, possibly because my playing style uses lots of vibrato so the frets wear evenly and you don't get the 'pits' in the frets associated with purely chordal playing. The electronics all work perfectly with no crackles or pops. The machineheads move smoothly and accurately and hold the tuning fine and the vibrato system is all functional as mentioned previously although the tip of the included tremolo arm has split (see photos) but this really makes no odds to its use. The metal parts have oxidised slightly but not enough to cause any problems. The Fender Custom Shop charges a premium to do this to their relic guitars and you get it here at no extra cost! All parts of this guitar are original apart from the upgraded input jack which is now a superior Switchcraft jack which will last for years without any hassle. REASON FOR SALE After such a glowing review, why am I selling this guitar I hear you ask? The reason is that despite being a Japanese Squier fanatic, I have succumbed to the charms and allure of a Custom Shop Fender Strat (to my financial detriment!) which I thought I'd treat myself to as a reward for attempting to learn the guitar for the past 15 years and I need to reimburse the bank manager! There will be much more guitar related paraphenalia to follow! THE REST You are more than welcome to try the guitar out before bidding and I would urge you to do so if nearby so that you can tell if the guitar is right for you. If not, no bother as I'm sure if you like Strats, you will like this one! Collection is welcome and bank transfer is the preferred method of payment. Guitar will be shipped securely in a cardboard guitar box with the guitar in a GIG BAG encased in bubble-wrap and the box padded with newspaper. Any questions, please send me a message via Ebay and I'll return to you asap. The guitar has been restrung today with a new set of ERNIE BALL REGULAR SLINKY strings (10-46) and the guitar fully set up including action, neck relief, intonation and pickup height. If there's anything you feel I have left out of the description then please ask, or better still, try before you buy and I will be more than happy to accomodate. |
