VINTAGE CEDAR WOOD RETABLO WITH ANGEL~CUZCO

PRODUCT INFORMATION
Description
Fantastic arrival to our stock, travelling a long way from the ancient capital of the incas, Cuzco.

A one of a kind vintage art piece, this is a truly magnificent representative work of the Cuzco School Of Arts.
A stunning wooden gilded retablo with a beautiful painting and a simply amazing handcarved angel figure on top.

We have just received a few pieces of these magnificent, very rare retablos. It was very hard to find these retablos with such unique details: the angel on top, the doors and the drawer for the exvotos.
They have different religious motifs, and we will be listing them within the next few days. So be ready and start bidding on these superb religious rarities before they are all gone.

This type of retablo was a common work amongst the colonial altar pieces.
Made from cedar wood with touches of bronze leaf and handpainted decorations, you have to personally see this breathtaking piece to truly appreciate its uniqueness and originality.

The delighful handcarved details are really outstanding and the painting is precious.
Saint Catherine of Alexandria is featured in this work, a must to any religious/art collection.

A rare an valuable asset, don't miss this chance to acquire such a unique piece at an unbeatable price.

The small drawer at the bottom is where the faithful devotees placed their milagros ex votos. In moments of extreme tension, terror, or pain, faced with extreme disaster, man cries out to God and His saints. "Save me!" Sometimes he even makes a pact, or promise. When he is saved, he cries for joy. Someone has understood; someone has cared. A miracle has occurred. He prepares to offer thanks, but he also wishes to leave a trace of his story. Some material expression of his devotion tells his gratitude to all who see it. Hence the idea of the ex voto, a symbol of his gratitude.

This retablo has been done in the style of the works of La Escuela Cusqueña, the history of which is traced to the 17th century. Originally influenced by Spanish and Italian artists, this school was comissioned to paint sacred art in churches and monasteries throughout the Peruvian city of Cusco after the area was devastated by an earthquake in 1650. The collected efforts of numerous artists gradually evolved into a unique yet harmonious and consistent style, devoid of individualism.

The history of the Peruvian painting has its origins at the colonial era. The Spanish painters who arrived at the Viceroyalty of Peru taught their techniques to the local artists, and they began to shape in its linen cloths its own representations, proposing a new iconographic interpretation of the Peruvian reality. The catholic divinities were adapted to indigenous sensitivity and gave like result an own and singular way that had its maxim expression in the "School of Cusco Painting" ( La Escuela Cusqueña), during centuries XVII and XVIII.
