Stampless Letter - 1856 - Dishonest Man, False Identity

Stampless letter dated Spandau, April 1, 1856 to His Honour the Ambassador of the United States Mr. T. D. Vroom at Berlin. Believe that the writer is a German who has received a letter from his wife who must be in New York, with an article from a New York newspaper. "Amongst other things, she sent to me an article in original of an German Newspaper of New York, containing a new villainy of Rakieliewitz in consequence of which the German population of New York is enraged." It seems that this man, who was married, assumed the false title of Ambassador, proposed to a young woman, went to her father's house as "Ambassador of the U. S.", received his consent for the marriage and gave the man considerable money. He then sailed for New York "with his bride" and stayed in a hotel for a few days and then "took apartments". He lived expensively and went through the money and "she was turned out losing her package, R. had paid neither his or her bill." It goes on about her troubles and in a PS he says that "Rak is in this country arrived by the last Steamer Washington, should it be not possible to get him arrested." Measures approx. 8 1/4" x 13 1/2" when folded. Old scotch tape repair [see last image] over the hole from breaking the wax seal.
