NIGHTMARES IN THE SKY

GARGOYLES AND GROTESQUES

Text by Stephen King, photographs by f-stop Fitzgerald, published by Viking Studio Books, copyright 1988. There is no statement of printing. If you like Stephen King and strange images carved in stone, this book is for you! The first 35 pages or so feature King’s essay on gargoyles interspersed with Fitgerald’s photos. The rest of the book feature the great images out of gothic architecture. There is a color fold-out of photos in the center of the book.

FROM THE BOOK DESCRIPTION:

He takes me to the window, small, dirty, crisscrossed with old chicken wire, and points across the street to something which seems to be a monster being born not of a living creature but of a building. Seeing this obscene thing is a shock; what is worse is seeing the people passing to and fro beneath it, intent on either plotting their day’s business or planning their evening’s pleasure; they pass to and fro and do not look up.

None of them look up.

I hear him say it again: We don’t see them...but they see us.

Thus does Stephen King, the undisputed master of the modern horror tale, recall his first encounter with the nightmarish figure of a gargoyle. The sculpture, atop an otherwise nondescript New York City building, instilled within King a sense of horror that was “not precisely physical nor precisely mental.” It was a sense of horror so peculiar that it prompted him to pen the text for this book of photographs by f-stop Fitzgerald. Staring into the faces in these photographs, King says, is “like having a nightmare awake.”

Grotesque and repulsive, gargoyles nevertheless hold an undeniable fascination. Fitzgerald, a renowned avant-garde photographer, has captured the macabre, medieval essence of these fantastic creatures in 100 duotone and 24 full-color photgraphs. Gaxe into the faces of these monstrosities; once you’ve stopped cringing and are assured they aren’t going to fly off the page, you might be grantied an understanding of why these imaginary beings have figured in countless nightmares down through the ages.”

CONDITION:

This hardcover book and its dustjacket are in very good condition. The book’s black cloth cover is very clean and show almost no wear. It is a bit cocked--a slight slant. There is a tiny red mark on the bottom page edges near the spine which I assume to be a remainder mark. There is a gift inscription on a preliminary page. The interior is otherwise very good with no other marks, tears, odor, etc. Binding and hinges are very good. The dustjacket is rubbed along the edges and shows some wear at the corners, but is without tears or creases.

SHIPPING INFORMATION
(continental United States, Hawaii, Alaska, and PO Boxes)

USPS media mail is the least expensive option for shipping books. I have been told by “persons at USPS” that media mail is treated “exactly the same” as parcel post shipping. Certain rules apply, but for books it works well. Shipping normally takes less than a week, but sometimes it may take up to 2 weeks for books going across the country. Alaska and Hawaii take even longer!

The following options are available on request (email me or send the message via ebay’s notification system) and cost more than the above stated fee.

Priority Mail shipping will depend on the weight of the package and winners requesting this option should email me for the total shipping amount.

Some books can be shipped by Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelope. This is a fairly inexpensive option, but the book and its padding must fit into a 9 1/2 inch by 12 1/2 inch envelope. The envelope is not very sturdy, so I recommend it only for smaller, lighter books.

Larger and heavier books may fit in a Priority Flat Rate Box.

I do add a handling charge to the USPS shipping charges, around $2.00, most or all of which goes to pay my eBay and Paypal charges for the item you have purchased.

Delivery Confirmation will automatically be added (at no cost to you) for books costing more than $50, but can be added to any book shipment for 75 cents.

Insurance can be purchased at cost from the USPS and is based on the total value of the item being shipped. I will not be responsible for any item that is lost in the mail. If you do not purchase insurance you are out of luck if it is lost. This happens very rarely, maybe 1 or 2 times out of well over 2000 shipments I have made.

Winning bidders in the US can send funds via check, money order or Paypal. I do accept Visa/Mastercard payments through Paypal.

ALL books will be well packaged using bubble wrap and cardboard boxes. I generally send the item within 3 days of receiving funds. I receive many compliments on my packing and shipping speed---check my feedback.

NOTE: If you win auctions on separate nights, you should e-mail me, and ask me to combine shipping.

Local Pickup available upon request.

INTERNATIONAL BUYERS

International customers should contact me for shipping costs.

Paypal is my only accepted means of payment for international buyers.

USPS international rules and rates have changed recently and may be different than what you are accustomed to in the past. For instance, there is no longer a surface mail shipping option. A $2.00 US handling fee per shipment will be charged in addition to the USPS shipping fee. Shipping internationally has become very expensive in the last year due to increases in energy costs and postal fees.

Options for International Shipments:

First Class Mail International (formerly Airmail letter post)

This will usually be the least expensive option for single books or light weight items. Four pounds (1.8 kilos) is the maximum weight allowed. There is no tracking or insurance available for this option and shipping time varies by destination, but is usually 1 to 2 weeks.

Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelope

This is a fairly inexpensive option, but the book and its padding must fit. The envelope is not very sturdy, so I recommend it only for smaller, lighter books. Four pounds (1.8 kilos) is the maximum weight allowed. Shipping by this method usually takes from 6 to 10 days. Tracking is available, as is insurance, but there is an extra charge for insurance.

Priority Mail International

This may be the best option for expensive books. The cost depends on weight and destination. Shipping time is 6 to 10 days. Tracking is available, as is insurance, but there is an extra charge for insurance. Shipments over 6 lbs (3 kilos) can be shipped by Priority Mail Flat Rate Box cheaper than by the regular Priority Mail option. Same rules apply, but the shipment must not weigh more than 20 pounds (9 kilos).

Final Bid price will be declared on customs forms. The form will also be marked as "merchandise."
