Here is a very rare opportunity to bid on an out of print, and very hard-to-find, softcover booklet from 1981 and an original infrared press photograph from the booklet. The booklet is titled "Below The Visible Spectrum" by Stephen Paternite. Copyright, 1981. This very scarce, first edition, signed (on the title page) booklet measures 6" x 7" and contains 16 pages with 12 very beautiful, 300-line (double-black) duotone reproductions printed by Madzay Productions, Cleveland, Ohio. The booklet was designed by Robert B. Arnold, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. The cover stock is 80# Lustro Offset Enamel Gloss and the interior pages are 100# Lustro Offset Enamel Dull. This booklet was limited to 2000 signed copies, and sold out many years ago. The booklet was published to advertise and illustrate "Below The Visible Spectrum" a limited edition portfolio of original infrared photographs published by Paternite in 1981 ~ Introductions by Nicholas C. Hlobeczy and Joe LaRose..... From the introduction page..... "The artist is often the manipulator, altering perspectives in order to restore freshness and immediacy to our perception of the world, replacing familiarity with vision. This portfolio accomplishes that end. Stephen Paternite, who is adept at discovering nature's startling visual arrangements, helps us experience something of what it is like to look at things for the first time. The images are ethereal, dreamlike: falling water becomes thin and airy as smoke; foliage seems to glow from within. Yet their clarity draws our attention to the smallest detail, so that vast intricacies of pattern and light emerge. There are no 'messages' to be wrestled out of these images; nor are we handed cryptic symbols to decode. Rather, we are shown the natural world to be startling and beautiful seen in its own context. We discover a dream world that is really our own, a tranquil and infinite place that lies just beyond the veil of everyday reality" ......... The original (unsigned) press photograph is "Yellow Creek Falls, Bath Twp., Ohio,1980" and was captured with a 4x5 Deardorff View Camera and Kodak High-Speed Infrared Film. The press photograph was hand-printed on Ilford Ilfrobrom Galerie (double-weight) glossy fiber paper, and was archivally processed and selenium toned. The press photograph measures 8" x 10" with an actual image area of 5" x 5-7/8". The photograph contains some writing on the front bottom margin, and the photographers label and some information stickers affixed to the back. The back also shows some very light aging and some smudges (please see photos of front & back on photograph for close inspection). The press photograph is in fairly good condition considering it's 29 years old. The front of the photograph shows some very faint surface scratches and some light dents. The press photograph is enclosed in a Light Impressions clear heavyweight polyethylene storage bag..... Thanks for looking.... Good Luck bidding on this very scarce signed booklet and equally scarce press photograph..... Free USA shipping.....
