Stream in a Nottinghamshire Landscape

Original Oil Painting

by Arthur Spooner N.S.A. R.B.A. 1873 -1962

A superb oil painting on canvas by highly influential early 20th century Nottingham artist Arthur Spooner. The painting depicts a small stream running through rural countryside that is presumably in Nottinghamshire. This is a superb painting that is highly accomplished by an artist who relished the depiction of local scenes. The painting is in excellent condition the oil is not darkened in any way and the painting is free of imperfections. The painting is framed in a giltwood frame with minor imperfections. The painting is signed lower left. A very fine painting by a highly regarded artist and teacher that would grace any home or collection.

The painting is unframed but is signed lower right. A fine painting that would grace any home.

Arthur Spooner was a landscape and portrait painter from Nottingham. Spooner exhibited widely and was made a member of the Nottingham Society of Artists in 1908; he was vice president in 1924 and 1938.  He was made an associate of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1919 and a full member in 1920. He also exhibited on a regular basis at the Royal Academy.  Spooner taught landscape and figurative painting at the Nottingham College of Art in the early to mid 1900s to many now well know artists. His earlier work included landscapes, portraits and figure subjects but few have survived. Spooner's work is now highly sought after; it is unusual for one of his paintings to make less than £1,000 at auction.  Many make a lot more; in 2004 Christies sold  The Goose Fair, Nottingham for £218,050.  He died in 1961

Spooner's paintings sell for many thousands of pounds at auction; to view auction results for Spooner's work please see the picture section.

Art as an Investment

In these uncertain financial times tangible assets such as gold and art are being recommended as a safer alternative to stocks and shares by many leading experts.

“Companies go bust, artists don’t,” said David Douglas an Irish art expert of the recent economic turmoil.

Damien Hirst's phenomenally successful sale at Sotheby's recently illustrates that high end art is able to prosper in an economic downturn.  Less well publicised are the examples of the many thousands of lesser known artists whose work continues to increase in price when offered at auction.
