Stromatolite is petrified algae. There are many different varieties. This piece was purchased in a collection so I do not know the exact area it came from. other that the northwestern USA. It has excellent lines. It is very hard and takes a mirror finish. It is valued as a jewelry-making stone because of the finish and patterns. It is great for tours with children, almost as good a coprolite. I guess they don't call it algae jewelry for a reason. It weighs about 15.25 oz. and measures about 3.5 x 3 x 1.25". A good gift for a beginning fossil collector, for your class room, your lapidary shop, or just for fun.
