Description
Nintendo was a pioneer in many ways, and of the best examples is Super Mario Kart for the SNES. The "kart-racing" sub-genre didn't even exist before Mario and Bowser took to the miniaturized asphalt and dropped their banana peels for the first time. Since then, many clones have joined the karting club, but none have come close to the awesome balance and charm found in the original SNES classic. With wonderfully designed single-player levels (and many of them!) and the most addictive two-player battle mode to grace the platform, SMK will never be forgotten. It's always amazing when the first is still the best, and Super Mario Kart definitely deserves the title "amazing."

The precursor to the modern Mario Kart(s), Nintendo's first Mario Kart is surprisingly engrossing.  Every character has his/her own unique handling and sounds.  The backgrounds are engaging, and the graphics are great for the time.  There is an incredibly fun versus mode where 2 players can race against each other (and 6 computer charcters) or try to pop the balloons attached to one another's carts in Battle Mode (with 2 other computer characters).  SMK can be played for thousands of hours without getting boring as you learn the tricks to controlling each of the 8 drivers on each of the 20 tracks.  Add in the flying turtles and bananas that you get to throw at your opponents (and try to avoid!) and you have a really, really fun and challenging racing game with everyone's favorite characters.
