Superb Paleobotanical Large Format specimen prepared for microscopic examination. The slide measures 3 inch x 2 1/2 inch .
The specimen is a lateral thin section of fossil cone from plant species Cheirostrobus .The subject was extracted from the well known fossiliferous deposit at Pettycur in Scotland ,and is from the family of Calamites ,Tree like plants existing from the carboniferous period about 360 million years ago(see photo below).
The specimen on this slide is that old !
W. Hemingway was a noted, published , and well know Paleobotanist during the early part of the 20th century working out of Derby in the UK . His specimens are almost only found in large public collections at universities or museums. He also collaborated with Lomax in providing fossil specimens for microscopic examination to the scientific community.
