Surfboard Nose Art "Space Sky and Sea"

On May 6, 1966, Bud Gardner started building his brand of  beautiful surfboards. On May 6, 2009,  Bud Gardner started his 44th year of building his brand of beautiful surfboards and in all that time, he has personally shaped and colored each and every one of them.  He  is one of the last original surfboard builders from the 60's still building superior surfboards and was honored in 2007 by being nominated for Induction into the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame in the Pioneer Surfboard Builders Division.

What you see here from Bud Gardner is called “Surfboard Nose Art”.  These are designs that are put on the nose of some of “Bud Gardner Surfboards”.  They are made to be displayed and hang on the wall like the nose of a surfboard.  The construction starts with a 1 1/2" thick wood panel.  Added on is a 2" T-Band stringer and a Redwood and balsawood laminated nose block.  It is shaped with a top rounded edge and is laminated top and bottom with 7 1/2 oz. fiberglass.  The nose art consists of both fabric inlay blended with hand painted pigmented resin.  All the pinlines are done in pigmented resin.  They are finally coated in clear resin and then polished.  They hang on the wall from a built in recessed fiberglassed hole.  They are 36" long and have the same nose template as a 9' 6" Bud Gardner Surfboard.   They weigh 10 lbs. each and are built very strong to last a lifetime.  Each one has their own serial number.  Space Sky and Sea is # 5022.  This is another original idea from Bud Gardner.  There are 5 more photos following this description.  Don’t miss seeing them.
