If you think about it a feather is just an elongated scale or fingernail/claw material. the extra surface area to pump blood through allowed a primitive reptile the ability to warm its blood in the sun or to insulate the body at night and regulate the body temperature. Flight came later when feathers evolved into a higher surface area and length in smaller species. An Ostrich or Emu is a good example of how  a dinosaur may have evolved and has similar bone structure.
