TAGUA NUT SLICES PACKAGE OF 5

A package of 5 LARGE sliced Tagua nuts, ready for carving, inking, woodburning, staining, creating a button, pendant making, or whatever you want to do with these marvelously versative natural pieces. These are about ¼ inch thick, and run around 2 inches across (see the quarter in the picture)!

Known as "Nature's Ivory," Tagua nuts are the fruit of the Tagua or Ivory-Nut Palm. This renewable natural resource is found in the tropical rain forests of the Americas from Central America south.

These have long been carved into pieces of artwork or for beads or buttons, as the mature nut is very hard and longlasting. The fruit of the tree has several of these nuts inside, and the young fruit is soft and edible.

Trade in Tagua Nuts supports economies in rain forest areas, and provides an alternative to cutting down the forests.

The art of netsuke was originated by the Japanese in carving small ivory figurines. They moved on to more materials as ivory became expensive, and finally protected. One of the materials used today is the Tagua nut.
