THE BALLET COOK BOOK Tanaquil Le Clercq Have you even wanted something that you thought was out of reach? Well, up for auction is this rare and wonderful book written by the beautiful and talented Tanaquil Le Clercq, married to George Balanchine, entitled The Ballet Cook Book. This was published in 1966 by Stein and Day and belonged to our mother, who was an avid cook book collector and professional cook (as well as fashion designer in her “spare” time). It is hardcover, has no dust jacket and the outside fabric covers are a tad dirty from handling and although there is one bump on the top of the book (which we enlarged in photo 4) and some edge wear on one of the corners (see pic 3 on the bottom edge of the top), her book has no rips or creases in the inside, the edges of all of the pages are crisp and there are only 2 pages which you can tell the cook used it (see picture of handling in pic 5 – the Chicken Breasts Vermouth recipe was perfection!). Outside of this, the binding is tight and the pages are unmarked with any writing except for the first page which had our moms name in pencil and we have erased this for you – well, this is a used cook book. Okay, so now let’s tell of the inside: it features the dancers of the New York City Ballet during the 1950’s and 1960’s and the recipes, historical photographys, rehearsals, and performances as well as autobiographies and personal vignettes – there are many and each dancer has put their “signature” to their chapter. Balanchine is promptly displayed as he was a great cook and Le Clercq was witness to this. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. (No book should ever be out of reach because of price - they are MEANT to be enjoyed.) [NOTE: We are hoping that someone who loves ballet buys this as our mom bought this for us when were small taking ballet lessons to inspire us to learn more about the artists – that they had a life outside of just ballet! She bought this book second hand so you would be the third owner of this book. (We each subsequently have our own copies of this cook book as our mom went out and found one for each of us.)
