THE BRIGADIER AND THE GOLF WIDOW

by John Cheever

New York: Harper & Row Publsihers; copyright 1964, labeled a First Edition, ex-library, and in good condition
(Please scroll down for detailed condition notes & shipping info below)

VERY REASONABLE PRICE

ABOUT THE BOOK: Cheever's seventh book (after four other story collections and two novels). A collection of 16 stories, all of which first appeared in the New Yorker. One of Cheever's finest collections, with "The Swimmer" (made into the Burt Lancaster film). From the dust jacket: “This new collection of sixteen stories reveals John Cheever’s expertness employed with greater power to even more impressive effect than heretofore. No one writing in America today can approach Cheever in the province he has made his own… Some of the settings here – suburbia, Cape Cod, New York City, Italy – will be familiar to readers of his earlier books. So, too, will be certain of the predicaments from which the people of these stories hope to run away or to which they submit, dry-eyed. Yet however recognizable the physical or emotional terrain, each story here is singular indeed, and new.” Cheever won the 1979 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Critics Circle Award.

CONDITION: This hardcover, retired library book of 275 pages was copyright 1964, labeled a First Edition (followed by the letter ‘I-O’) and is in good condition. Please note: As with most retired library books, the dust jacket is covered by a mylar dust jacket for protection- and that mylar dust jacket was glued to the hardcover; mylar dj shows some typical shelf scuffing; library i.d. remains in and on the book; “WITHDRAWN” is stamped on endpapers; tear mark on rear endpaper where library i.d. was removed; a number of pages have minor faxing (spotting) mostly limited to margin areas; there is an occasional stray pencil mark and some pencil lines on contents page. None of this detracts from the overall quality and appearance of this 43-yar-old volume. Highly readable and costing less than a paperback would!

PAYMENT & SHIPPING: Please note that as of May 11, 2009, the United States Postal Service has once again raised their rates for both domestic and international shipping. Shipping and handling will be either $4.00 for media mail to USA locations (padded envelope-takes longer) or $5.95 for Priority Mail flat rate envelope shipping and handling (faster) to USA locations (buyer's choice on shipping). Delivery confirmation is offered for an extra 80 cents if desired. Payment may be made by PayPal only, as ebay no longer allows sellers to offer buyers the option and convenience of paper payments and is forcing all ebay ebayers to use ebay’s PayPal service (for which sellers must pay them both a flat fee and a commission).

We will ship internationally with rates to be determined following auction, depending on country. International buyers will pay actual postage PLUS a small handling fee. The total cost of Priority Mail International flat rate s&h to most of Europe (including the UK, Spain, Germany, France, Sweden, etc.), and to Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, is US$14.00; to Canada and Mexico: US$12.00. International buyers must pay by PayPal only, as ebay no longer allows sellers to offer the option and convenience of paper payments and is forcing ALL ebayers to use ebay’s PayPal service (for which sellers must pay them both a flat fee and a commission). Payment should be received within 7 days of end of auction.
