Here is a beutiful replica of one of the Europe's most famous historic chess sets. Although it is traditionally named for the great king Charlemagne, chess actually came to Europe just a little later than Charlemagne's reign. In fact, the original set dates to the 11th century, and was probably carved in Southern Italy. It now resides in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris (shown in the final picture, below).

UNIQUE HISTORIC DEPICTIONS

The forms of these pieces tell of a precious moment in chess history. In the 11th century, chess was an Arab game, new to Eruope. The traditional Islamic pieces are literally depicted in the ancient rook (a chariot), the bishop (an elephant), and the knight (a horse as it still is). Only the queen had been added, in place of the Arabian king's advisor -- a European change which has lasted to this day. In subsequent centuries, the identities of the chariot and elephant were obscured and later re-invented as a castle tower and a bishop.

A BEAUTIFUL SET, BOARD NOT INCLUDED

Perhaps because it harkens to an ancient day of kings and old world battle, this chess set continues to be associated with the great 8th century king Charlemagne. It is a work of royal beauty in any century. Notice the detail with which the ancient carved pieces have been re-worked in this modern reproduction.

Please note that no board is included in this set. It is sold as pieces only. It is recommended that this set be played on a board of 2 to 3 inch squares.

LARGE, HEAVY, DURABLE AND FELTED

The tallest pieces, the king and queen, stand 3 5/8 inches tall; the elephant is 2 3/4 inches from front to back. This set is molded from the most durable type of casting stone. The pieces alone weigh a substantial five pounds (2.27 kilograms). Each piece is covered on the bottom with felt, for comfort in playing and protecion of the chessboard.
