Ken Russell's (Altered States, Tommy, Liztomania, Salome's Last Dance, The Lair of the White Worm) film of Aldous Huxley's book "The Devils of Loundon" is a astonishing tale of human depravity and Church sanctioned cruelty.

Cardinal Richelieu and his power hungry entourage seek to take control of pre renaissance France, but need to destroy Father Grandier (Oliver Reed) - the priest who runs the fortified town that prevents them from exerting total control. So they will have to destroy him...accusing him of witchcraft and being in control of a bedeviled nunnery, who's hunchbacked Mother Superior (played with a chilling creepiness by Vanessa Redgrave) is sexually obsessed with Grandier. To sort out these matter the Church brings in a Witch Hunter to gather evidence, and the Fathers troubles really begin.

This version of Ken Russell's masterpiece restores all of the cut footage that was removed when the film was released (and disowned by it's film company), including the never before seen "rape of Christ" sequence.
