Detailed item info
Synopsis
The six members--five women and a man--of the eponymous book club include Sylvia, whose husband has just left her; Allegra, her adventurous lesbian artist daughter; multi-married Bernadette; and Grigg, who actually prefers science fiction. As the book club meets to discuss Austen's six incomparable novels, they also find themselves bonding over other, more personal, issues--and finding also that sometimes life and literature intertwine. The author, Karen Joy Fowler, has said in an interview that the best part of writing her own book was the necessity of re-reading those of Jane Austen, which she terms--and quite rightly--"devastatingly witty." A New York Times Notable Book for 2004.

Industry reviews
"Bright, engaging, dexterous literary entertainment for everyone, though with many special treats and pleasures for Janeites."
Kirkus  (03/01/2004)

"Ms. Fowler has the genial notion to see in the book club--that newish American cultural phenomenon--a society resembling nothing so much as one of those sets of country gentry among which Austen constructed a social comedy where irony stiffens sentiment, and pain is a cool afterthought....In Ms. Fowler's wit, the way she renders the pratfalls of emotion and desire, and the deceptively mild temperature of her splintering detonations, she comes closest to her model."
New York Times Book Review - Richard Eder (04/30/2004)

"...Fowler's shrewdest, funniest fiction yet, a novel about how we engage with a novel."
New York Times Book Review - Patricia T. O'Connor (05/02/2004)
