Item Description: The original Clarke Penny Whistle. Established 1843

Handmade in England of rolled tinplate, Clarke's famous pennywhistles have been around since 1843. The Clarke tinwhistle of today retains all the essential features of those played by Whistling Billy 150 years ago! The traditional conical bore has been retained to give the instrument its unique timbre and rounded tone. Like the originals. tin plate sheets are rolled, soldered. and polished by hand, after which the wooden plug (fipple) is inserted. Each instrument is then "voiced", ensuring a good clear sound

The Clarke Story:

In 1843 a farm laborer called Robert Clarke decided to try his hand at something else in order to supplement his meargre wages. With the help of the local blacksmith he made a set of tools to made a tin whistle. Before long he moved to Manchester where he built a small factory and eventually became the largest manufacturer of pennywhistles in England. The Clarke pennywhistles being made today are still following the traditional methods thereby ensuring the quality of the unique Clarke tone.
