THE OUTLINE OF SCIENCE Thomson 1922 LONDON Vol 1&2
This auction is for Volume One and Volume Two of The Outline of Science, A Plain Story Simply Told edited by Professor J. Arthur Thomson and published in London by George Newnes Limited. The actual publication date is unstated, but believed to be 1922 based on the date of publication of the U.S. version of this book, as well as the last date of external references cited in these volumes.
The two volumes are filled with interesting sections including The Story of Evolution, The Dawn of Mind in Animals, The Wonders of Microscopy, Psychic Science, The Romance of Chemistry, Applied Science (Wireless Telegraphy and Telephony), Flying, The Science of the Sea, The Science of Health, and much more!
Each volume has about twenty colored plates with images such as: The Marconi Wireless Station at Berne, Vesuvius in Eruption, The Evolution of Domesticated Pigeons, The Spectroscope, The Aurora Borealis, Peregrine Falcon Attacking a Rook, and many others.
The Volumes measure 11 inches by 8-3/4 inches and are about 1-3/8 inches thick (each). Total weight of the two volumes is just over 8 pounds.
The Volumes show light cover wear, especially at the corners and edges. Inside pages have some occasional light notes in pencil, and some light foxing, but are in very good condition overall. The bindings have some light cracking, but are still tight with intact pages. We rate the two volumes as being in good to very good condition (see pictures above).
This is a great set of vintage Science books containing a nice assortment of colored plates. They would make a wonderful addition to any collection!
