Movie description

Although the film was not a critical or commercial hit when it was first released, Kevin Costner told the New York Daily News in late 2000, "I loved making THE POSTMAN. I understand they're showing it in school now to illustrate mythic heroes. Does it attach itself to me like some blemish? That's just cute journalism. I love that movie the way [Frank] Capra loved IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE."

Description:  Not too far into the future, what was once the United States has become an apocalyptic wasteland terrorized by what amounts to a militant dictator.  General Bethlehem maintains his vast army by attacking the dotted villages and small towns that still survive by forcing them to pay him duty with trinkets and baubles and conscripting their "pure" residents into his vast army.  Once such man is an enigmatic drifter with a mule, who despite his best efforts to remain free, suddenly finds himself in Bethlehem's army and in the wrath of both Bethlehem and his officers.  Determined to remain free, he escapes, only to nearly freeze to death. Then he finds an old truck containing a bag of mail and a mail carrier's coat, he uses the coat and mail to con his way from town to town.  As he spreads a false story about a new President and re-opened mail routes to gain free meals and avoid Bethlehem's dogs, who are determined to hunt him down, The Postman soon finds himself at the center of a heroic rebellion against Bethlehem and his army.  Communication is everything, as is proven by the few pieces of mail that change the destiny of a country from chaos to civilization in The Postman.  Original Theatrical Release 1997.  DVD Release 1998.
