Hummel #4 "Little Fiddler"
Incised TMK1
Rare earliest trademark.
Full crown, incised mark. The full crown mark was first used in
1935. It was used until 1950. The incised form is from the
earlier part of this era.
This "little fiddler" has
the early impressed or "incised" crown mark.
Stands
4-15/16" tall.
This
figurine is the same as Hummel #2, except that the hat is finished in
charcoal black. It was first modeled by master sculptor Arthur
Moeller in 1935. The old names for this style are "Violinisit" and
"Wandering Fiddler." The reference book value for this figure,
with this early trademark, is more than $700.
I have found three bubbles
formed during the casting process. Each is detailed in a close up
photo. There is one on the back of the rim of the hat. One
is on the bow for the violin. The last is on the back side of the
boy's right arm.
On the back of the boy,
under his left arm, there is a lateral scratch. It has proven
difficult to photograph, as it has apparently been colored to match the glaze color
on the boy's coat.
This figure is amazingly
free of crazing. Most TMK1 pieces show significant crazing due to
the differing coefficients of thermal expansion between the glaze and
clay body. Very few have survived since the 1930s and 40s without crazed
glaze.
